COVID-19 has changed many things about daily life. There is additional stress on our health, job, and routine. During such a time of uncertainty, it is important that those with diabetes take care of themselves.
Stress can impact our physical and mental health; therefore, it is important to find new ways to manage it. This looks different for everyone. Try prioritizing your sleep and rest, get some fresh air and take a walk, try a new hobby, or phone a friend.
The virus alone may seem like a big threat, but we also need to take proper precautions. Those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should do their best to avoid catching the virus. High blood sugar can weaken the immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off infections, especially a deadly virus.
What to do Now:
-
Take care of yourself, prioritize your needs
-
Get plenty of rest
-
Get moving! Exercise helps manage stress and improves mood
-
Eat often, the more colorful your plate the better!
-
Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
-
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces
-
If disinfectant is out of stock in stores, you can make your own with 1 part bleach and 9 parts water
-
Frequently monitor your blood sugar levels
-
If you become sick, contact your doctor or schedule a telehealth appointment
-
Follow CDC and your local health department guidelines for information about health safety indoors and out
